Muted Thoughts

We sat there quietly in the snow,
Under the same moon of the year.
And slouched together, back to back,
Staring at the woods from two sides.

Filling conversations with muted words
We dialogued over thoughts and things.
She said I said she said I said;
Without so much as opening our lips.

Who'd break the silence?
Who'd make the first move?
She knew I couldn't
I knew she wouldn't

There were silences before.
The Sound-less silence.
The Judgment-free silence.
The I-understand-you silence.
The You're-a-bitch-but-I-love-you silence.
But the jagged edges of the How-could-you silence
Kept echoing all around the space.

We couldn't pick up from where we'd left
In five revolutions around the sun.
So we sat there tongue-tied, back to back,
Glaring at the same dark sky.

I wanted to remind her
She wanted to remember
The amazing friendship we had once shared.
But we continued sitting there, back to back

So that neither of us was cold.

  4. The way you set the scene gives credence to the broken friendship you describe so well.

    1. Thanks Kerry. Well, sometimes friendships find their way back after a little mending as well. I'm sitting here, hopeful :)

  5. Awww... how sad... some friendships last a lifetime, others fade with it. It's a shame when that happens.
Loved the imagery all through this.

    1. So true. But one can't do much about that. I guess a lot heals over time. Thanks for visiting.

  6. Oh, this is so heartbreaking. How we can be so stubborn at times (my Mom used to call it "cutting off your nose to spite your face). You have captured the pain of a failed friendship brilliantly.

  9. Hmm. What good in being stubborn? I'd rather speak first and risk being laughed at or hurt. At least honesty makes one move on... This was very sad as such behavior is such a waste of life.

    1. True! And sometimes, the right word in time can salvage so much. Then again, those that move on are meant to do exactly that. Aah, the twists and turns of friendship. Thanks for your note Margaret :)

  11. OK, commented on his yesterday, not sure if I am mildly retarded and didn't push the publish button or if my comment enraged you and you ripped it off of your site like a lace camisole after two pitchers of margaritas. But I want to comment...so in the case that I am fundamentally slow...and didn't push the button button, here it goes.

The course of a relationship is almost always a crap shoot, and this is a very accurately human reflection of two people trying to separate those feelings. I love the visual of them sitting back to back, and I love the inner voice attitude, cuz thats where everyone has the most attitude isn't it, regardless of how they are on the outside. Sometimes need outpaces desire as time wears on. I loved this.

    1. Awww!! I wouldn't have any reason to delete your comment :) Thanks for coming by and taking the trouble to write it all over again.
The back-to-back bit is true, ain't it! We're always looking at the same world from a different perspective. Now friendships could be salvaged if friends just sat next to each other and resolved their differences.
Thanks for your note again. That was super encouraging :)
