Invisible Ideas

My mind
reads like
the open canvas
of a New
Word Doc.
Barren blankness
spread out thinly.
I rummage through
the recesses
of my brain
and hack hard
at the keyboard
without a flow
of thought.
Stream of
Consciousness
is a dwindling
brook with
spurts of water.
Little winged
black birds
dip into this rivulet
and splash across
the parched screen
with a voracious
appetite for
vocabulary.
Strung by the
invisible chord
of syntax
and the unused
facets of grammar,
they cluster
in seeming
randomness,
forming syllables
in a sharp
unbold typeface.
The birds are
backspaced
while other
clusters are
pasted elsewhere,
flapping wings
to stay together
as a whole.
Forced to migrate
from a different
starting point,
they fly across
with meaning
on their backs.
But where
the heck
is the damn
punchline?

  1. I love the playfulness here, especially how your last line parodies everything that came before it. I also enjoyed your use of baron images....the blank word doc, the little black birds migrating. What a clever post. Thanks for offering such a vivid response to my challenge!

    1. Thank you for such an interesting challenge. At first, I truly didn't know where I was going with it... so ironically this truly was the process that brought the poem to life :P Thanks so much Izy :))

  2. I agree with Izy...there is a playfulness here..I feel at times like this when I write...I get to the end and think "What's the point in all of it?" then I hit post. :)

  3. I found this poem so appealing from start to finish. Loved the central metaphor, and the little touch of the black birds, so like the letters as they appear and disappear on the blank screen.

    1. Oh wow! I didn't think of it that way... but that's a great interpretation :D

  4. I love the "process" here. I find I will have pages written and scribbled and then I transfer it to the computer screen and end up with maybe... 5 lines at best. Ha... we all have our approach to poetry.

    1. Oh you do the handwrite-type thing too? I used to do that for a while. I just couldn't get myself to ideate in front of a keyboard. Thankfully that has changed a bit now. But every time I face writer's block, I run back to the scribble pad :)
