A Bagful of Reminiscence

The brown satchel sat there, snugly tucked between her winter clothes and overcoats. She'd rummaged through this section of her wardrobe hoping to find something casual to sling along her left shoulder.

The tan leather looked raisin-creased in an unaired closet with faded impressions from over use. She loosened the contents hastily, with the glee of a child waiting to discover the trinkets in his mum's forbidden drawer.

Dried flowers. Lost perfume. Expired paracetamol tabs.
Gooey chocolate. Gandhian coins. Sticky change in between.
Deformed granola bars. Parched wet-wipes. Gunk.
Chipped sea shells. Two movie tickets. Cufflinks.
Duplicate keys. Pantyhose. An invitation card. Rust.
Sandy grime of time on things.
On photographs and filigree alike.

She recklessly overturned the forgotten fragments on the cold floor. And then swept the remains into a biodegradable bin.

Realizing, that every once in a while even old memories can do with some recycling.

  6. Yes, some memories ought to be swept up and thrown away never to be re-visited. I smiled when I saw the Paracetamol tabs. They don't sell those here but they sell their equivalent as in Tylenol (I guess)
I think most of us have a bag or a drawer like this in our houses. Filled with junk and memories.
    Loved this :)

  9. Paracetamol tabs!

Over here it's called Panadol. Yes, lots of knick-knacks that clutter. A regular spring cleaning would help!

  13. Amongst the nasty snacks, there are signs of a former lover (perhaps live-in). She may have carried this bag the night they broke up and tossed it in the back of her closet to forget the whole night, to painful to even carry the bag anymore. They had gone to the movies recently. He had given her flowers, jewelry, chocolate (perhaps) ... and at some point, he returned his key to her (or their) house/apartment. There are signs of trips together, spontaneous lovemaking (removed pantyhose). And then it all ended and she couldn't bear to face the contents of their up-ended life together (until now).

I do wonder about that invitation card, though. Did they go to a party where he met someone else?

    1. *Brims from ear to ear* I am so touched that you took the trouble to join the dots on her story. And you nailed it!

They'd dated. He'd given her flowers and chocolates. She'd wanted to lose weight (so snacking on granola bars) and look hotter. They'd gone to the beach (sea shells), and the movies (2 tickets). He'd stay over at hers (cufflinks) sometimes, and she'd stayed over at his (pantyhose). They'd been intimate and were dating more seriously (duplicate keys).
They had photographs and little trinkets (filigree) exchanged.
But things turned around. The relationship ended. The keys turned rusty. She gets a wedding invite from her cousin. And it has his name on it.
She abandons the bag in the recesses of her closet... just like she would like to keep some of her memories. But she's chosen to move on and that's why she overturns the contents into a recyclable bin.

Thank you so much for dropping by, Flipside :)
